The kids started the cold morning (13 Celsius degrees) with the Holey Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Right after that, we went to “The Car Show”, which was a car flea market with the some of the oldest and newest automobiles in town. The kids could see them in several shapes, sizes and colors. Then, we went to school again for lunch and headed to some of their favorite stores for toys and electronics such as “Toys R Us, Future Shop, Best Buy and Wal-Mart”. They stayed there for a while and did some shopping. Later on, we all went to “Wendy´s” in order to celebrate Eduardo´s birthday, an activity that had already been scheduled by his classmates days before. It was in this place where we all could see the real spirit of the Canadian people after a slight incident that took us by surprise but didn´t ruin the celebration.
The story goes like this: all the kids were having their hamburgers excitedly because of the occasion and they were even listening to their favorite music (reggeaton) to make the moment nicer, but there was a middle aged lady beside them who started complaining about the music and the way the kids were talking –a little louder, but it was ok, since they were celebrating-. So, she came to the table where the teachers were eating the food and mumbled to us that the kids´ behavior and music was unacceptable and disrespectful just because she didn´t want to hear any noise there. Then, she complained to one of the waitress who scolded the kids for their behavior…this made Gisele, the supervisor in charge of the external activities, very angry, because she knew that the boys were doing nothing wrong and she rejected these women´s behavior and guess what?? The other Canadians who were in this place also disapproved these people´s reaction…. Tara and Bryan, a very nice couple who were eating with their two beautiful daughters came to us and told us that the kids were ok and there was nothing to be worried about. They started asking questions to us about the kids and our country, found out about Eduardo´s birthday celebration and decided to buy some ice cream for everybody. At the end, all the boys had pictures with this nice family and they apologized for these women´s words wishing lots of fun to us. In return, Tara received some Colombian souvenirs, one from the kids and the other from Gisele.
Tara and Bryan looked really happy to share that moment with the boys and were thankful for the presents.
When leaving this place, Gisele talked to the manager about the incident and promised not to come back to this place again with kids. Then, we took a walk around downtown.
The kids didn´t really care that much about the lady´s complaint and said: “Teacher, that woman was crazy”.
